Bruce Newton, Certified Professional Golf Instructor
Personal Entry - AUGUST 27 2010
As I sit and reflect on my past, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. I have been personally responsible for guiding over 1000 young people on their continuing travels through their pursuit in education. Combining my personal passion for the game of golf with children in schools, I did manage to coach a junior golf team for the last 19 years of my teaching career. As spring rolled around I enrolled about 10 to 16 grade 7 and 8 students in an after school golf programme. For 4 weeks in April they traveled into town to an indoor facility to receive guided instruction from a CPGA pro (Ken Varty). Under his guidance, I was able to help students learn the basics of the grip, swing and the game. Then the following month the students participated in a four-week golf programme at a local golf course.
When I retired in the spring of 2000, I decided to combine my passion for golf with a paycheck. I loved working at the course so much but what I really wanted to do was teach golf! In 2002 I enrolled in the certification program for the CGTF. I found the instruction to be invaluable and the people teaching the course to be very knowledgeable. So I ventured out into the real world armed with my trusty CGTF card and started a golf teaching business. Things went reasonably well for the first year. I was involved locally with two ladies leagues and had built up a clientele of around 10 clients.
In the summer of 2003 I golfed at a northern course called North Granite Ridge. I presented myself to the pro shop and proceeded to play my first round of golf at their relatively new course. The time spent there was most rewarding but I would not know the full effect of this until the spring of 2004. In March we returned from an extended vacation in Florida to find a message from the owner and pro shop manager of North Granite Ridge. They were interested in having me work at the golf course as their head teaching pro. We met for an interview, hit it off and shortly after I started teaching there.
I taught at North Granite Ridge for 3 years. During that time I started a men’s league as well as a Junior golf programme called Future Links. This programme is affiliated with the RCGA.
As a CGTF and USGTF member I personally can endorse the Natural Golf method. With the assistance of the tapes I set out to change my golf swing. At the time I found it necessary because of a continuing lower back problem. I am constantly accessing the web site for more information and I am personally ready to begin teaching the Natural Golf method.
It was during the winter of 2005 where I saw the beneficial aspect of the Natural Golf Swing. During the weekly men’s league I shot a 6 under par 30 for the 9-hole league. It was at this moment that I decided to pursue the opportunity of becoming a certified instructor.
I have been certified since April 2006 and I am presently one of two Natural Golf Instructors in the province of Ontario. I presently work out out of Innisbrook Golf Course in Barrie where I am in charge of the starters and marshals. I also do short game instruction in putting and chipping at this facility. For full shots I use the Georgian Greens Driving range on Highway 27 or Duffer's Dugout driving range on Highway 90.
